
Next on the Julian Walton and Guests Winter Lecture Series XIX, is “The Archaeological Achievement of Patrick, Canon Power” with Elizabeth Shee Twohig.
Canon Professor Patrick Power (1862-1951) is well known to scholars and the general public as the writer of The Place-Names of the Decies, first published in 1907. But the Canon was also very actively concerned with medieval and historical archaeology, with church history and folklore generally, principally in his native County Waterford. This talk will discuss his contribution to archaeology, his role as Professor of Archaeology at University College, Cork from1914/5 until…., and the extent to which he fitted into the archaeological scholarship of the first half of the twentieth century.
Elizabeth Shee Twohig taught archaeology at UCC and is still research active in research, principally in megalithic art and megalithic tombs in Ireland and beyond, as well as in the history of the study of Irish archaeology. She lives in Annestown when she is not travelling.
The lecture will be followed by a questions and answers session, and refreshments will be served afterwards.
