Alfred Aylward, a native of New Ross, played a key role in the major activities of the Fenian Brotherhood and was deported to South Africa, where he organised a miners’ rebellion and was adviser to the victorious Boer army during the war of 1880-81, then migrated to America, where he took part in the North-Western Rebellion.
